What is a Social Security and why is it important for working in the U.S.?
- A Social Security Number (SSN) is a permanent nine-digit number that is issued by the U.S. Government and is needed to facilitate payment for scholarships, employment in the U.S., and to file a U.S. tax return.
How do I know if I am eligible?
To be eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN), Global students will need to:
- Have an on-campus job offer or be authorized for CPT, OPT, or Academic Training, and
- Have an active SEVIS record
What if I am not eligible?
- Students who are not eligible for an SSN may need to apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for the purposes of tax treaties and filing taxes.
Where do I find the Social Security Number application?
- A completed Social Security Card Application (available at the Social Security office or online at www.socialsecurity.gov/online/ss-5.pdf)
What documents do I need for my Social Security application?
- Valid Passport
- Most Recent Form I-94
- J-1 Visa or F-1 Visa
- Most Recent Form DS-2019 with Port of Entry Stamp or Form I-20
- Birth Certificate (Certified or Original), If Available
- Proof of Employment Eligibility
- An employment verification letter must be signed and stamped by a DSO (F-1) or ARO (J-1) immigration adviser for authorization before it can be taken to the Social Security Administration Office
What information should the Employment Verification Letter include?
The original letter must be on an UCF Letterhead and include the Following:
» Name of Applicant
» Applicant Visa Status
» Nature of the Job
» Employment Start Date
» Number of Employment Hours per Week
» Employer Identification Number
» Supervisor Name, Telephone, and Signature
What is the application process for a Social Security Number?
- Applications need to be completed in person at the Social Security Administration Office.
- It is important that you apply for an SSN as soon as possible, no later than 2 weeks from your hire date.

What happens after I submit my SSN application?
- You will receive a Social Security Card containing their SSN in the mail within 2-6 weeks of the date of application.
- It is very important to sign the card, memorize the SSN, and keep it in a safe, secure place (i.e. not your wallet or purse).
- The SSN is a very sensitive number that can be used to open bank accounts and credit cards. It is important to keep the number safe and secure to prevent identity theft.
- Students working on-campus at UCF must provide their SSN to facilitate payroll and taxes.
Important Reminder:
- During your SSN appointment, the social security officer should provide you with a letter confirming that you have successfully applied for a social security number. Please email this letter and your UCF ID to UCFTAX@ucf.edu.
How do I update my Social Security Number in UCF Workday?
- You will need to update your SSN in your Workday profile.
