Definition: 
Proactively develop yourself and your career through continual personal and professional learning, awareness of your strengths and weaknesses, navigation of career opportunities, and building meaningful relationships inside and outside of your organization. 

Why It Matters 

Career & Self-Development shows employers that you’re motivated, goal-oriented, and eager to grow. Taking initiative in your learning and career planning helps you stand out, adapt to change, and make the most of your college experience. 

Sample Behaviors 

  • Show an awareness of your strengths and areas for improvement. 
  • Seek and apply feedback for continuous growth. 
  • Set professional goals and create action plans to achieve them.
  • Advocate for your own development and support your peers.
  • Display curiosity and a willingness to learn.
  • Take on additional responsibilities that contribute to your professional progress.
  • Actively network and build relationships with mentors and industry professionals.
  • Participate in training, workshops, or other career development opportunities.

What It Might Look Like in the Classroom 

  • Setting semester goals related to academic or career interests and reviewing them mid-term.
  • Using professor or TA feedback to improve future assignments or presentations.
  • Reflecting on your performance after a group project to identify growth areas.
  • Attending career panels, employer events, or UCF Career Services workshops.
