Perspective Awareness

Definition:
Recognize, understand, and appreciate various viewpoints and experiences to foster effective collaboration and decision-making. This competency emphasizes valuing diversity of thought and creating an inclusive environment where all contributions are respected.

Why It Matters
Perspective Awareness helps create stronger teams, better problem-solving, and more equitable workplaces. According to NACE’s Job Outlook 2025 survey, students often rate themselves highly in this area (78.3%), but only 63.3% of employers agree. Research also shows that diverse teams are 25% more likely to achieve above-average profitability and can outperform homogeneous teams by 35%. Developing this skill enhances collaboration and organizational success.

Sample Behaviors

  • Seek and incorporate input from individuals with varied perspectives to enhance decision-making.
  • Contribute to practices that promote fairness, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support efforts to ensure all individuals have opportunities to contribute and succeed.
  • Engage in experiences that expand understanding of different viewpoints.
  • Remain open to new ideas and different problem-solving approaches.
  • Identify challenges that limit participation and work toward practical solutions.
  • Adapt to different environments and situations with flexibility.
  • Recognize and address factors that create imbalances in opportunities or outcomes.

What It Might Look Like in the Classroom

  • Actively listening to different opinions during class discussions.
  • Incorporating diverse sources or perspectives into research projects.
  • Adjusting group project approaches based on teammates’ experiences.
  • Participating in campus or community events that promote inclusivity.
  • Reflecting on personal biases and their impact on academic work.
