Technology

Definition:
Understand and leverage technologies ethically to enhance efficiencies, complete tasks, and accomplish goals. Technology competency includes using digital tools effectively, adapting to emerging innovations, and applying technology to solve problems and improve productivity.

Why It Matters
Technology skills are critical in today’s workforce. According to NACE’s Job Outlook 2025 survey, 71.7% of employers rate technology proficiency as “very” or “extremely important,” while 72% view new graduates as proficient—often more so than graduates rate themselves. With the rapid integration of AI and other emerging tools, developing strong technology skills ensures adaptability and competitiveness in the job market.

Sample Behaviors

  • Navigate change and remain open to learning new technologies.
  • Use technology to improve work efficiency and productivity.
  • Identify appropriate tools for completing specific tasks.
  • Integrate information through technology to support timely and effective decision-making.
  • Adapt quickly to new or unfamiliar technologies.
  • Use technology to manipulate information, generate ideas, and achieve strategic goals.

What It Might Look Like in the Classroom

  • Using collaboration platforms like Teams or Google Workspace for group projects.
  • Applying AI or data analysis tools to research assignments.
  • Quickly adapting to new software introduced in a course.
  • Creating presentations or reports using advanced features in digital tools.
  • Staying aware of cybersecurity best practices for online coursework.
