About Dr. Ronald McNair
Ronald Erwin McNair was born October 21, 1950 in Lake City, South Carolina. While in junior high school, Dr. McNair was inspired to work hard and persevere in his studies by his family and by a teacher who recognized his scientific potential and believed in him. Dr. McNair graduated as valedictorian from Carver High School in 1967. In 1971, he graduated magna cum laude and received a bachelor of science degree in Physics from North Carolina A&T State University (Greensboro). Dr. McNair then enrolled in the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1976, at the age of 26, he earned his Ph.D. in laser physics. His dissertation was titled, “Energy Absorption and Vibrational Heating in Molecules Following Intense Laser Excitation.” Dr. McNair was presented an honorary doctorate of Laws from North Carolina A&T State University in 1978, an honorary doctorate of Science from Morris College in 1980, and an honorary doctorate of science from the University of South Carolina in 1984. While working as a staff physicist with Hughes Research Laboratory, Dr. McNair soon became a recognized expert in laser physics.

Research and Mentoring Program (RAMP)

The Research and Mentoring Program (RAMP) provides UCF undergraduates with hands‑on research experience and structured support as they prepare for graduate or professional school. Students work closely with a faculty mentor, whom they must secure prior to applying, to complete a research project and participate in activities that strengthen their understanding of the graduate school process. Designed to support Pell‑eligible, first‑generation, and transfer students, RAMP helps participants build the skills and preparation needed to become strong applicants for advanced degree programs.
Research
Undergraduate research experience is a central component of academic preparation for graduate and professional programs. Engaging in research allows students to explore areas of interest, refine their academic and career goals, and identify graduate programs that align with those interests. Through this process, students develop essential skills such as critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and problem‑solving—competencies highly valued by advanced degree programs. Research experience also strengthens a student’s application for admission and funding opportunities and helps foster meaningful relationships with faculty members who may serve as mentors or recommenders.
Graduate and Professional School Preparation
Preparation for advanced study includes developing a strong understanding of program requirements, prerequisites, and expectations across disciplines. Students research potential graduate or professional schools, evaluate program fit, meet academic standards, and prepare materials such as résumés, statements of purpose, and personal statements. Effective preparation also involves gaining relevant experience, engaging with academic communities, and building relationships with faculty or mentors who can offer guidance and provide letters of recommendation.
Wellness
Wellness is a vital element of successful graduate and professional school preparation. The application process and the demands of advanced study require sustained focus, resilience, and intentional self‑care. Maintaining physical, emotional, and mental well‑being supports academic performance, motivation, and long‑term success. Practices such as consistent sleep, healthy nutrition, regular exercise, mindfulness, and stress‑management strategies help students stay balanced and avoid burnout. GPS Prep encourages students to reflect on all dimensions of wellness and integrate healthy habits into their academic and personal routines.
Applicants are required to meet the following eligibility criteria:
